| Arkansas | Governor Mike Huckabee signed into law a Clean Indoor Air Act which ensures that nearly all workplaces, including restaurants, are smokefree. |
| California | California has been smokefree for several years in public venues including bars, bowling alleys and clubs, and restaurants. |
| Colorado | Effective July 1, 2006, Colorado will become smokefree in all workplaces including bars and restaurants. |
| Connecticut | In 2003 Connecticut became smokefree in the workplace, including restaurants and bars. |
| Delaware | On Nov. 27, 2002, Delaware became smokefree in all public buildings and workplaces including bars, restaurants, and casinos. |

| Georgia | Effective Friday, July 1, 2005, Georgia became smokefree in most public places including bars and restaurants that admit minors. |
| Hawaii | The Hawaiian legislature has passed Senate Bill 3262 which ensures that all enclosed or partially enclosed public places and places of employment, including restaurants, bars, bowling alleys, and nightclubs are smokefree. |
| Idaho | In 2005, Idaho passed legislation that ensures smokefree worksites, restaurants and bars. |
| Illinois | On January 16, 2006 all workplaces including restaurants in Chicago will be smokefree. On March 1, 2006, the Chicago suburb Deerfield enacted what is currently the strongest clean indoor air ordinance in the state of Illinois. A statewide smokefree law has been introduced in the Illinois General Assembly this year. |
| Indiana | The city of West Lafayette passed a smokefree ordinance covering all worksites, restaurants and bars on April 3, 2006. On January 1, 2005, Bloomington became smokefree in worksites, restaurants, bars and public places. |

Legislation making all public places in maryland, including bars and restaurants, smokefree will be introduced during the 2007 Maryland General Assembly session. |
| Massachusetts | In July 2004, a statewide smokefree regulation went into effect in workplaces, including restaurants and bars. This comes after many local communities became smokefree, such as Cambridge and Cape Cod. |

| Montana | In April 2005, all restaurants became smokefree unless they are a bar/casino where the food receipts are limited to 40 percent. Bars/Casinos will become smokefree in 2009. Other smokefree areas include, all businesses public and private (no exception for private clubs), schools, nursing homes arenas and public transportation. |
| Nebraska | The capital city of Lincoln, became smokefree in the workplace including bars and restaurants on Jan 1, 2005. |
| Nevada | The Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act will be on the November 2006 ballot and would make a number of public places smokefree and restore local control, allowing communities to take stronger action against secondhand smoke. The Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act would eliminate smoking in restaurants, retail stores and other worksites. |

| Ohio | Smokefree Ohio is working with more than 225 partners to put a strong, statewide, clean indoor air law on the statewide ballot this November. The city of Columbus became smokefree in restaurants and bars as of May, 2005. |
| Oklahoma | A July 2002 law regulated restaurants serving more than 50 customers as follows: they can declare themselves entirely smoking, entirely smokefree or effectively smokefree. Same for indoor workplaces with 15 or more employees, bars, pools halls, bowling, adult day care, malls, and certain medical facilities. Hotel lobbies and youth camps are to be smokefree. |

| Texas | In April 2006, the Laredo City Council voted to ensure smokefree workplaces, including bars and restaurants. On September 1, 2005, changes went into effect strengthening Austin's smokefree air law to include bars, nightclubs, bowling alleys and previously exempted restaurants The changes to the existing ordinance were approved by the votors in May 2005. Austin joins several other Texas cities, including El Paso, with comprehensive smokefree air ordinances. |
| Utah | The Governor of Utah signed into law an update to Utah's Clean Air Act. The update will ensure smokefree worksites, restaurants and bars. |
| Vermont | Vermont became smokefree in September, 2005. |
| Virginia | The State Senate passed a Clean Indoor Air Act, SB648, this year, however, the House of Delegates allowed the bill to die at the subcommittee level when the bill was considered in their Chamber. If passed, this bill would have made all workplaces, including restaurants, smokefree. |
| Washington | Washington voted to become entirely smokefree, including restaurants and bars, on November 8, 2005. |
| Washinton, D.C. | Washington, D.C.'s smokefree air ordinance will take effect on January 1, 2007. The law will ensure smokefree environments in almost all public places and workplaces, including restaurants and bars. |
| West Virginia | Cabell County is smokefree in restaurants, workplaces and bingo halls. It was supported by the state Supreme Court in May 2002. |
| Wisconsin | The 2006 Wisconsin Legislature is considering a smokefree air bill, which would make all restaurants and bars smokefree. On September 21, 2005, the Madison city council voted 10-9 to keep its smokefree air ordinance as is, and not to exempt stand-alone bars. On a vote of 14-5, the council also chose not to send the ordinance to voters for a spring referendum. |

On March 2004, Ireland became the first country in Europe to impose on smoking in workplaces, restaurants and bars which set the tone for many other countries to follow. A detailed timeline listed below.
